Official sources have indicated that the Government through the Ministry of Education has launched the Dusangire Lunch program whereby a total of Rwf 90 billion will be spent to cement the full implementation of the School Feeding Program.
Available statistics also indicate a pending commitment of Rwf231 million was pledged through the School Feeding Program of which Rwf58 million has been received.
Dusangire Lunch program will enable the entire Rwandan community to contribute whatever they commit to offer throughout the incoming academic year of 2024/2025.
Minister of Education, Gaspard Twagirayezu commenting on the program urged a collaborative role of everyone to make the program fully implemented.
He said; "It’s not only the role of the government or parents who have children in school but it’s the role of all of us as Rwandans."
According to Minister of State for Education Claudette Irere the aim of the program is to ensure that the school-children are well-fed and able to concentrate on their studies.
Minister of IRERE Claudine, the State Minister of Education shed light on the program's impact noting that "School Feeding Program has significantly contributed to the student’s performance since its establishment.”
A new mechanism is timely with the new opening of a long academic year to maintain the retention rate of students and minimize dropouts according to officials.
For the hesitant parents who do not contribute to the program, the Minister said “the awareness campaign can susceptibly increase their participation.”
According to last year’s statistics, the 65% of parents embraced the program while 35% did not participate implying that the participation is still school low.
To streamline the program's operations, the government has centralized the bidding process for lunch supplies at the district level, a shift from the previous exercise whereby each school managed its own procurement.
The contribution required from parents is moderate for low-income earners as low as Rwf975 per semester and Rwf3,000 per year.
