Ishimwe Munezero is currently engaged with his school girlfriend, he recalls how he met her when she transferred to a certain school. He had kept this one rule about dating in school ‘don’t hang with opposite sex’ until he met a girl he dated and she turned things around.
He was supposedly having to remain in the realms of the school rules and regulations and understanding the rules of the school, he abided with it. “I told my girlfriend why I couldn’t date her because of the school rules,”
Munezero though believes that not all the students obey the school regulations as required and most schools have couples despite the fact that they are aware of the school regulations and rules.
Ezra Kayiranga, a teacher based in Kigali, says when students are in relationships, they spend a lot of time together and therefore school children get distracted instead of concentrating on courses and revisions.
"Allowing the school children to involve relationships won’t do any good for them when it comes to performance," Kayiranga says.
Kayiranga adds that because of development trends and social media networks students are forced to mature young and therefore they know the consequences that may come out of early relationships.
“I think parents and teachers need to follow students with strict guidelines where such related matters arise,”
Meanwhile, Sonia Manishimwe agrees that the rule is too hard for some students and therefore they tend to violate it. “No matter how restrictive the school rules are when you meet this person who appreciates you, you will not care about the damn rule,” she said.
She says the school regulations really make sense but not everyone can respect it. “If students are able to not go against the school regulations they are lucky but if they can’t, they shouldn’t be judged it is a distraction, but there are things you can’t help yourself without”
