Ten Rwandan students from Collège du Christ Roi Nyanza has won an international medal in the First Lego League Competition held in the city of Houston in the State of Texas, United States of America.
The First Lego League Competition is an international robotics competition for students under the age of 15.
The Minister of Education, Gaspard Twagirayezu welcomed the students and lauded their performance and thanked their family members for supporting their children.
The Rwanda Education Board wrote on X “Honorable Gaspard Twagirayezu welcomed 10 students and 2 teachers from College du Christ-Roi who had recently returned from participating in the international First Lego League,”
Uwase Sonia a participant from Collège du Christ Roi Nyanza says that the competition has benefited her a lot and broadened her technical knowledge.
She said: "We have met with different countries and we have learned a lot from them and we have also benefited from them."
Asante Chris, the 2nd run-up student from the same school in the competition says that what he has gained from the competition improved his hands-on-skills in technological studies which he believes will tap to develop the country.
According to him, what they did in the competition was beyond their expectation.
He added "Our project was good, and they gave us a medal for good performance in the project and explaining it."
Commenting on the competition, Diane Senghati Uwayisenga, the Head of the Educational Technology Department at the Rwanda Basic Education Board explained that the competition started with the selection of schools at the provincial level and 5 schools from each province and the City of Kigali has to win.
She noted; “it’s a pride for Rwanda as a country participates in this international robot competition.”
Uwayisenga congratulated Rwandan students expressing their tremendous performance despite the recent participation in the competition as a country.
She said; "We started successfully in schools only 2 years back, and you can see that it is an interesting step because there are countries that started before Rwanda but so far they have not been able to reach those 100 teams."
The competition was attended by 156 teams from different countries around the globe.
She further disclosed that the competition will be taken to more “20 schools in Rwanda and that if possible the plan is to take the program to all schools in the country.”
